The Ethical Slut - Dossie Easton & Janet Hardy (2009)
Not in the least because of the intriguing title of the book - I confess - I've started reading "The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures" by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy . The book discusses polyamory as a lifestyle, and provides practical guidance on how such long-term relationships work and are put into practice.
Wikipedia says: Polyamory (from Greek πολύ [poly], meaning "many" or "several", and Latin amor, "love") is the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. It is distinct from swinging (which emphasizes sex with others as merely recreational) and may or may not include polysexuality (attraction towards multiple genders and/or sexes). Polyamory is often described as "consensual, ethical, and responsible non-monogamy."
The authors start by defining the term slut as "a person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you." The term is reclaimed from its usual use as a pejorative and as a simple label for a promiscuous person. Instead, it is used to signify a person who is accepting of their enjoyment of sex and the pleasure of intimacy with others, and chooses to engage and accept these in an ethical and open way — rather than as cheating. The Ethical Slut discusses how to live an active life with multiple concurrent sexual relationships in a fair and honest way. Discussion topics include how to deal with the practical difficulties and opportunities in finding and keeping partners, maintaining relationships with others, and strategies for personal growth.
Firstly: make no mistake, this IS a self-help book. There's a lot of "learning to love yourself" stuff in here - much of it not relating to polyamory at all. But for some reason those parts, didn't bother me, and actually made it such a good read. The Ethical Slut is interesting in a lot of different ways. The authors are proponents of polyamory, or open relationships, that's true. Maybe the basic idea seems a bit far-fetched for you, even. But the basic tenants of communication and how to strengthen a core relationship, the little exercises for opening up the lines of discussion between a couple - everything in this book is very valuable.
... And not only to people in a relationship, monogamous or not. Friendships are relationships too, mind you! This book has interesting views on how to learn to understand, appreciate - and love - your friends and basically to become a better person. Which makes this book great for anyone, seriously. Read it. It has changed my life already!

Seks, drugs... en aids – Elizabeth Pisani (2008)
ENG: “The Wisdom of Whores: Bureaucrats, Brothels and the business of AIDS.”

Eating Animals - Jonathan Safran Foer (2009)
Nederlandse titel: Dieren eten
Publié en français: Faut-il manger les animaux?
It's has been a very long time since I've read a book that has had such an drastic and immediate impact on my life. Eating Animals has been an instant international bestseller and has received great praise, but I hadn't heard about it until I've read an interview with the author in a Flemish newspaper. Although the book is full of facts and figures - it comes with nearly 300 footnotes and a full index - it is written as a novel, which makes it easy to read. It's also full of philosophical reflections that make you feel uncomfortable as a reader... because most of the facts are things you already knew, and most of the reflections are thoughts that you and me have had already at some point in our lives - but only to choose to forget all of it afterwards. But if you read all the facts and reflections bundled in one book, suddenly it's not so easy anymore. So, what is the book really about?
People love animals. Millions own a dog or a cat. Millions maintain freshwater aquariums... A majority of owners report that one of the reasons they enjoy keeping pets is that they consider them part of the family.
People also love to eat animals. Most of them are raised under conditions that are, as everybody knows — or, at least, have no excuse not to know — barbaric. Until now, I was - like many people - only annoyed by the way they are killed. I'm not anymore.
Facts: chickens typically spend their lives within four walls, in cages or not, with thousands of other chickens and generations of accumulated waste. The ammonia fumes from their rotting excrement lead to breast blisters, leg sores, and respiratory disease. Bred to produce the maximum amount of meat in the minimum amount of time, they often become so top-heavy that they can’t support their own weight. At slaughtering time, they are shackled by their feet, hung upside down, and dipped into an electrified bath known as “the stunner.” For pigs, conditions are little better. Shortly after birth, piglets have their tails chopped off; this discourages the bored and frustrated animals from gnawing one another’s rumps. Male piglets also have their testicles removed, a procedure performed without anesthetic. Before being butchered, hogs are typically incapacitated with a tonglike instrument designed to induce cardiac arrest. Sometimes their muscles contract so violently that they end up not just dead but with a broken back. I've let out the part on cows and the cruel details of industrial fishing... - not that they are less shocking.
How is it that people, so careful if it comes to their pets, are so indifferent toward the animals they cook for dinner? The answer cannot lie in the beasts themselves. Pigs, after all, are quite companionable, and dogs are said to be delicious. This inconsistency is the subject of Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Eating Animals”.
Foer was just nine years old when the problem of being an “eating animal” first presented itself. One evening, his parents left him and his older brother with a babysitter and a platter of chicken. The babysitter declined to join the boys for dinner.
“You know that chicken is chicken, right?” she pointed out. Foer’s older brother sniggered. Where had their parents found this moron? But Foer was shaken. That chicken was a chicken! Why had he never thought of this before? He put down his fork. Within a few years, however, he went back to eating chickens and other animals. During high school and college, he converted to vegetarianism several more times, partly to salve his conscience and partly, as he puts it, “to get closer to the breasts” of female activists. Later, he became engaged to a woman with a similar history of relapse. They resolved to do better, and immediately violated that resolve by serving meat at their wedding and eating it on their honeymoon. Finally, when he was about to become a father, Foer felt compelled to think about the issue more deeply, and, at the same time, to write about it. “We decided to have a child, and that was a different story that would necessitate a different story,” he says.
Foer ends up telling several stories, though all have the same horrific ending.
One is about shit. Animals, he explains, produce a lot of it. Crowded into “concentrated animal feeding operations,” they can produce entire cities’ worth. Imagine, Foer writes, if “every man, woman, and child in every city and town in all of California and all of Texas crapped and pissed in a huge open-air pit for a day. Now imagine that they don’t do this for just a day, but all year round, in perpetuity.” Not surprisingly, the shit in the ponds tends to migrate to nearby streams and rivers, causing algae blooms that kill fish and leave behind aquatic “dead zones.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some sixty thousand km of American waterways have been contaminated by animal excrement. (In Europe it's probably a bit better, but still very similar).
Another of Foer’s stories is about microbes. In the U.S., Foer reports, people are prescribed about 1,3 million kilos of antibiotics a year. Livestock are fed nearly 13 million kilos, according to the drug industry. By pumping cows and chickens full of antibiotics, farmers have been instrumental in producing new, resistant strains of germs—so-called superbugs. Officials at many health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control, have called for an end to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics on farms, but, of course, the practice continues.
A third story is about suffering. Intuitively, we all know that animals feel pain. (This, presumably, is why we spend so much money on vet bills.) “No reader of this book would tolerate someone swinging a pickax at a dog’s face,” Foer observes. And yet, he notes, we routinely eat fish that have been killed in this way, as well as chickens who have been dragged through the stunner and pigs who have been electrocuted and cows who have had bolts shot into their heads. (In many cases, the cows are not quite killed by the bolts, and so remain conscious as they are skinned and dismembered.)
And here are some other random things to think about:
Americans choose to eat less than 0,25% of the known edible food on the planet, modern industrial fishing lines can be as long as 120 km - the same distance as from sea level to space (for the amount of kilos of shrimp we eat, at least up to 50 times that amount of fish is thrown back in to the sea, alive... or dead!), animal agriculture makes a 40% greater contribution to global warming than all the transportation in the world combined, and is the number one cause for global warming... Did you know that industrial chicken only has 400 cm2 of space (half a A4) for its entire life? Or that the average American eats 21.000 animals during his lifetime? And when is the last time you've actually seen birds like chickens or turkeys FLY?
Reading this, you would think that Foer is advocating for vegetarianism as the only moral way to go. But it's a bit more complicated then that. He also deals with the social and cultural aspects of eating meat, and the health issues of a strictly vegetarian diet. In short: he makes you think for yourself. Towards the middle of the book he meets a non-industrial farmer, and empathises. But given that bio-farming doesn't even make 1% of the whole meat-industry and the "bio"-label hardly means a thing... he personally chooses for vegetarism. But he leaves it finally up to the reader to decide for him/herself.
And so do I. But not without a link to an interview with the author, and to a German documentary (dubbed in French, for Arte - merci Isma!) which provides a bit of video footage to the questions raised in the book. Pretty disturbing stuff...

Jezus Van Nazaret - een realistisch portret - Paul Verhoeven (2008)
English title: Jesus of Nazareth - A Realistic Portrait
This book is soooo good. This book is so good that it makes you angry at other books for not being as good as this one. It should be our right to expect, whenever we pick up a book, that the contents be as insightful and well-researched and reasonable and communicative as this one.
I'm not a religious person and neither is Paul Verhoeven, but we both find the story of Jesus compelling. Verhoeven is world famous as the Dutch director for movies like Robocop, Basic Instinct and Total Recall, but he has also spent the last quarter century studying Jesus and his findings are in this work. Paul Verhoeven is the only non-theologian admitted to the Jesus Seminar, a group of scholars dedicated to uncovering the historical Jesus.
He looks at the life of Jesus from an historical point of view, trying to piece together what things were really like through the fog of the heavily-edited gospels. He uses his experience as a movie director to find the real story behind the rescripted storylines everybody knows. He has a simple thesis: that Jesus was a real person, and that nothing impossible ever happened to him. He then re-examines period documents and two thousand years of criticism to piece together the real story of who this person was.
When you start with those ideas as a foundation for a book on Jesus, it means you're going to discount a lot of what is written in the Gospels. What, then, can an author do in this situation?
The options are to: a) rearrange the stories; b) replace some of the content with ideas from apocryphal gospels, other ancient writings, and speculations by centuries of scholars; c) just plain make stuff up.
Verhoeven does all of these things. It makes for an interesting read: he has obviously studied the materials closely, and the book is well-annotated (indeed, 40% of the pages are footnotes).Verhoeven did his homework.
Verhoeven digs into the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist, the sin of riches, exorcisms, and much more to paint Jesus in human terms. Jesus is not an ideal for Verhoeven, but a living, breathing person, with fears and failures alongside his accomplishments. Jesus is a hunted criminal who masterfully escapes the long arm of the law...until an apostate disciple masquerading as a Zealot (not likely one of the twelve, nor even named Judas, according to Verhoeven) leads the authorities to him.
After Jesus' crucifixion, his disciples believed he returned from the dead. But if the whole of the Jesus story were wrapped up in this miracle of overcoming death, Christianity could not have survived for 2,000 years. Jesus created powerful parables and devised a new code of ethics; regardless of his false understanding that the kingdom of God was imminent, he indeed transformed the world. Verhoeven closes his book with this paradox: Jesus' mistaken view of reality led to the most significant ethical revival in the past two thousand years.
Paul Verhoeven started the book by telling his readers that this is a book he absolutely wanted to publish because it was important to him, and he wasn't sure he would be able to release his views as a film during his lifetime. As it turns out, in 2012 he announced that a film project is being developed. There is already a lot of controversy about the project, and that's a pitty. And actually, I cannot imagine the film being as good as the book, because it's bound to miss a lot of the context and the many annotations that the book has. Although I don't underestimate Verhoeven's talent any more.

Voor Europa! Debout l'Europe!

Duizenden mensen die uit één keel "I would walk on water just to be with you, Walk on water just to be with you Split the ocean, cross the sea, Walk on water if you believe" brullen, het is bijna een religieuze ervaring. :-) Topconcert!

Vijftig tinten grijs - E.L. James
Shit, shit, shit! Zijn mond... leidt me erg af...
Het leidt me af.
Zucht.

The Boyfriend List - E Lockhart (2005)
The reason why I started reading this novel is a story on its own right. I litteraly stumbled upon it in the main hall of our building. After trying to get it back to its owner, I ended up reading it myself. I admit that the cover with the frog was one of the reasons to open it. The book turned out to be very entertaining, and I had lots of fun with it during my trip to Istanbul last year.
I’ve waited almost a year to write about this book, but I recently discovered that it has been followed by three sequels, The Boy Book (2006), The Treasure Map of Boys (2009), and Real Live Boyfriends (2010). These four novels are also known as the Ruby Oliver novels, based on their central protagonist. All of them I’ve read on my Kindle, and all of them are still very amusing. Ideal traveling/holiday literature.
"The Boyfriend List" can probably be discribed as chick flick, or a young adult book. I don’t care. I enjoyed it a lot, just as I did before with The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾ (1982) by Sue Townsend - and as I am typing this, I see that that book had sequels too! Back to The Boyfriend List. Poor Ruby "Roo" Oliver has had a miserable ten days. Not only did she lose her boyfriend to her (no longer) best friend, but she also got caught kissing said (ex) boyfriend, earning the reputation of a megaslut and social outcast ("leper") at Tate Prep, the private school she's attended on scholarship since kindergarten.
Ruby's also suffered from five panic attacks in this time period, which is why she started seeing Dr. Z., her psychologist. As part of therapy, Ruby is asked to write a list of every boyfriend or crush she has ever had. Wanting to be as complete as possible, Ruby has everyone from her preschool playmate to her first kiss (courtesy of 'spin the bottle') to her only actual boyfriend, on the list. Unfortunately, Ruby's former best friend, Kim, finds a rough draft of the list, Xeroxes it, and gives a copy to every student in school. You can use your imagination to figure out what kinds of rumors get started from a list like that.
Ruby Oliver is the most realistic "teenager" I've read in a long time. She is very witty, yet naive about human nature, and readers can feel Ruby's pain with her as she learns how to deal with a broken heart and stand tall in the face of false rumors. There is some mild profanity from time to time and lots of talk about boobs, but nothing graphic or shocking.
Each chapter of The Boyfriend List covers a boy from the list (there are fifteen total), while also taking readers through Ruby's history with her ex-boyfriend, Jackson Clarke, and Kim, who started dating Jackson three short days after he abruptly broke up with Ruby. This book is written from Ruby's frank first-person perspective, with tons of explanatory/neurotic footnotes peppered throughout. For example, in relating the time the uber-popular Katarina tells Ruby about walking in on Jackson and Kim in the buff at a party, readers will find the following footnotes annotated within three paragraphs:
"10. What? She thought I'd seen Jackson's thing, as in penis thing? And she thought I'd like to hear that she thinks I've seen it?
I swear, I have no understanding of other human beings. Being a leper suits me perfectly, if my only other choice is being friends with Katarina.
11. Heidi must have seen it! Otherwise, why would Katarina think I had seen it? She must think penis viewing is the norm for Jackson's girlfriends.
12. So Jackson was getting naked with Heidi and with Kim. But not with me.
13. Why not with me? Did he not like me as much as those other girls? Was I less attractive than them? Ruby Oliver, not the kind of girl you'd want touching your penis. Ruby Oliver, not exciting enough to try and get her pants off. Ruby Oliver, good enough to kiss, but not good enough to get naked with..."
As you can see, Ruby has the same doubts and insecurities as most teenagers, and I believe that reading how she works through them could be beneficial for teens. That's not to say that Ruby ends the book with everything peachy keen, but she does show significant growth, which Lockhart enhances over the next books in the series. Enjoy!

Komt een vrouw bij de dokter - Kluun (2003)
Published in English: Love Life, by Ray Kluun
Hij is on top of the world. Hij heeft het gemaakt. Maar dan slaat de borstkanker toe. Stijns wereld stort in.
